For William J. Birchler

There are times in time—

Awakenings of beginnings—

When we first see that first star,

The one we want to find again

Between those that have come since then.

Sometimes, it shined

Just for me it seemed.

To help me stay my course

It beamed a beacon light

Even through the farthest night.

Then, in time,

A genesis for each of us,

We grew because of you—

A brother, a friend, a son—

Someone for everyone.

Now,

Look out and in and see:

We are all this star.

Draw close to the light we know;

Feel its forever warmth, wonder, and glow.
